How to Think Aorta

To "think aorta" means to be alert to the possibility of an aortic dissection, a life-threatening condition where the aorta, the main artery carrying blood from the heart, tears.

The "Think Aorta" campaign aims to raise awareness and improve the diagnosis of this condition, especially in emergency settings, by emphasizing the importance of a quick CT scan.

Key points to consider when thinking about the aorta:

Severe Pain:

Sudden, severe, and often sharp pain, especially in the chest, back, or abdomen, is a key symptom.

Tearing or Ripping Sensation:

The pain may be described as a tearing or ripping feeling.

Other Symptoms:

Numbness or weakness in limbs, and a history of collapse can also be present.

Prompt Medical Attention:

If you or someone you know experiences these symptoms, seek immediate medical attention and emphasize the need for a CT scan, according to the THINK AORTA campaign.

CT Scan as the Standard:

CT scans are considered the gold standard for diagnosing aortic dissection and quickly identify the location and extent of the tear.

Early Diagnosis is Crucial:

Aortic dissection is a life-threatening emergency, and early diagnosis and treatment significantly improve outcomes.
