Aortic dissection is a life-threatening condition that occurs when the aorta, the main artery carrying blood from the heart, tears. Symptoms can include sudden and severe pain in the chest or upper back, and can feel like ripping or tearing. Other symptoms include shortness of breath, nausea, and dizziness.

Symptoms

Sudden, severe pain in the chest, upper back, or abdomen

Pain that feels like ripping or tearing

Pain that spreads to the neck or down the back

Shortness of breath

Dizziness or fainting

Low blood pressure

Weakness or paralysis on one side of the body

Difficulty speaking or vision problems

Nausea and vomiting

Aortic dissection can occur at any time, but it's most common when there's a sudden increase in blood pressure. This can happen during heavy exertion, but it can also occur while resting or sleeping.
